Advancing the Role of Private Finance in the Managed Phaseout of Coal Power

To achieve the Paris Climate Agreement’s goals, coal power generation assets must retire early. Financing the accelerated managed phaseout of high-emitting assets is essential to reducing global emissions and provides financial institutions (FIs) an opportunity to play a key and urgent role in the real-economy transition to net zero. In this webinar we are excited to discuss the topic of coal managed phaseout, including: presenting two working papers prepared by RMI’s Center for Climate-Aligned Finance (the Center) that lay out guidance on:

• Metrics and targets: How new and supplementary approaches to measuring, setting targets for, and disclosing progress on managed coal phaseout financing can remove barriers and even incentivize and accelerate FI involvement
• Financing mechanisms: How, where, and when FIs can use different financing mechanisms to support a transition away from coal power generation while securing risk-adjusted returns

The webinar will additionally cover RMI work on developing criteria for credible coal transition finance and feature practical examples.
